The Stud is situated in Ledcourt Road. Ledcourt at the foot of the Northern Grampians just south of the Western Highway and about 27kms to the west of Stawell. The property “Colefield” comprises 1300 effective acres of what is usually regarded as merino sheep country rather than cattle country in a 550ml rainfall area.
Commercial cattle have been run since 1973 and the stud was formed in 1985. Stud cattle are now the only enterprise. Each year we join about 220 cows, half of which are artificially inseminated, and up to 100 yearling heifers.
After empty females have been culled and others sold we calve down up to 250 females. Joining takes place from the 1st of June for seven weeks.
The herd was first recorded with the National Beef Recording Scheme in 1980 and we are Foundation Members of Group Breedplan. We are dedicated to performance testing which places emphasis upon fertility, calving ease, ability to raise a live calf and structural soundness as well as objective measurements of all traits including birth weight, weight gain, milking ability and carcass traits.
We believe that our figures will stand comparison with any Hereford or Poll Hereford Stud in Australia. Bulls are sold by private treaty all the year round from late spring onwards when they reach 600 days of age. However a selected group is reserved for our on-property sale to be held in autumn. At different times of the year we also have for sale rising two year old heifers pregnancy tested in calf and young cows with calves at foot that have been rejoined and pregnancy tested in calf.
Bulls and/or semen have been sold to all states of Australia and New Zealand. Our most successful sire MTT Fellis Y12 now has 647 progeny in Australia and 127 in New Zealand.
